From witch doctors to apothecaries, the study and dispensing of medicinal remedies has been a long sought after trade. A pharmacist is todays medicine man (or woman) and they must meet specific requirements to become one. I recently spoke with Kate Shaker, Pharmacist in Charge at Geiger Gibson Community Health Center , to find out how one becomes a pharmacist.
According to Ms. Shaker, students hoping to attend pharmacy school must first pass the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT). Pharmacy school can take 4-6 years depending on the program you choose and whether or not you have an undergraduate degree. Some students then complete a residency but it is not required. To become licensed you must pass the state exams.
Pharmacy technicians, on the other hand, must be 18 years old and possess a high school diploma.
