Harbor Community Health Center, Hyannis recently hosted an afternoon tea to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The response from the attendees and providers was heartwarming. Harbor Community Health Center, Hyannis partnered with the Cuda Women’s Center- Cape Cod Healthcare, which is where we refer our at-risk patients. The event was held at the Cuda Center on Friday, October 18 from 3:30pm-6:30pm. Thirty-five women were in attendance.

A light afternoon tea was served, and the room was decorated in shades of pink, with music from Vivaldi playing in the background as the group gathered. The speaking program included information on breast self-examination and post-operative therapy, as well as presentations on breast imaging from Dr. Lara Bryan-Rest and on breast surgery from Dr. Robin Sachs. The extraordinary woman who wrapped up the evening was a breast cancer survivor who truly touched the audience narrating her personal story and self-reflections. In addition to the gift bags which Harbor Community Health Center, Hyannis sponsored, the hits of the evening were the strings of pearls which were provided to all attendees.

In all, the event delivered a tangible resource for the participants and also fostered a valuable partnership between HCHCH and Cape Cod Hospital’s Cuda Women’s Center. It also generated a good amount of media attention and helped further develop our relationship within the Cape Cod community at large. The staff at Cuda is excited about making this an annual event, and there appears to be strong support for additional partnership opportunities in the future including teaching opportunities for our providers by their staff once we move to our new facility.

One of the best outcomes of this event is that it demonstrates the promise of other outreach opportunities, especially after our move to Attucks Lane. Our next big happening is “Living Well with Diabetes,” an educational event we’re hosting with the YMCA of Cape Cod on November 14. Hope you can join us — more information to follow!
