Healthier Alternative Summer Food Choices

Ice cream. Hot dogs. Burgers. Cotton candy. These are some of the foods that are eaten more often in the summer, but are high in fat and sugar. Here are some healthier foods to eat instead so that you don’t have to entirely give up the foods you enjoy the most in the summer.

Less healthy food:                                      Try this instead:

Ice cream                                                           Low-fat/nonfat frozen yogurt or cool whip with fruit

Hot dogs                                                            Lean chicken or turkey sausage

Beef burgers                                                      Lean chicken or turkey patty

Cotton candy/fried dough                              Fresh fruit salad

Soda                                                                    Water

It’s important to stay hydrated in the summer, especially during heat waves. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day; more if you are exercising or doing activities outdoors. It’s also important to check your blood sugar levels throughout the day. Signs of low blood sugar include feeling tired, hunger, dizziness, sweating, headaches, and shakiness. If you feel that your blood sugar is low, eat or drink 15 grams of carbohydrates, which is equal to: ½ cup of juice or regular soda, or 4 small pieces of hard candy or 4 crackers. Wait 15-20 minutes and check your blood sugar. If your blood sugar is still low, eat another 15 grams of carbohydrates and check your blood sugar again in 15 minutes.
